Aluminium is a ductile silvery-white metal. By interaction with the atmosphere, aluminium is rapidly oxidized and covered with oxide film. The film serves as reliable protection from corrosion. Aluminium is chemically resistant to nitric and organic acid medium, however it fails in alkaline one. Rich reserves of aluminum in nature, high corrosion resistance, its low density, good electrical conduction favoured the wide spread occurrence of aluminum. Good corrosion resistance of aluminum is caused by the formation of a thin dense oxide film on its surface which protects the metal from further oxidation.
Aluminum bronze is widely used alloy. It has a corrosion resistance to marine and tropical atmosphere in comparison to other bronzes. This alloy is used for the manufacture of parts operating under load at high temperatures and under conditions of high wear and corrosive action: gearwheels, bushings, friction gears, cocks, parts of water and steam turbines.
