Gold is a metal with yellow colour, which is characterized by high ductility and corrosion resistance. When using gold for the manufacture of dentures, high ductility of pure gold, while providing the metal the desired shape, leads to high-speed wear of pure gold teeth. In this regard, dentures and jewelry are made not from pure gold but from its alloys. The corrosion resistance of these alloys is specified by the gold content, and the mechanical properties and colour shades – by the ratio of such metals as silver and copper. Gold is a heavy metal that is why many products are not made from gold as a whole but just plated with it. This process is called cladding and is carried out by thermal, mechanical or chemical methods. Gold coatings are highly resistant and have good reflecting power. Such coatings were used at artificial satellites, thus protecting them from excessive heat and corrosion. Gold is also used in medicine as a means of cancer treatment. Radioactive gold allows to cure some cancer types. So treatment with «radioactive needles» destroys superficially located breast tumor after 25 days. However, radioactive gold in used not only in medicine, but also in the chemical and petrochemical industry as a substitute for platinum catalysts. Gold is also applied in manufacturing of substrates for nuclear targets that are used for the synthesis of transuranium chemical elements. Such target represents a polished gold foil.
